Deliveroo drivers are employees

In February 2018, Deliveroo altered the relationship with its drivers in the Netherlands from an employment contract into a so-called partner agreement. However, less than a year later – in January 2019, the District Court of Amsterdam (Rechtbank Amsterdam) ruled that the relationship between Deliveroo and its drivers still qualified as an employment contract under Dutch civil law, because Deliveroo continued to have enough authority, and the operational autonomy of the driver did not weigh up to the drivers’ dependence on Deliveroo.
